Abstract The beginning of any narrative is especially important, since it offers the necessary keys to face its reading and its correct interpretation. This is also the case with the beginning of the Gospels. On this occasion we will deal with the prologue of Mark and the only biblical quotation in it. After studying it and analyzing its peculiarities, with respect to both Mark\'s account and the other synoptic gospels, this article intends to show the role of this Old Testament reference and how it seems to become the interpretative key to the presence of the Old Testament in the second Gospel.
