Abstract Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are among interesting devices for providing frequency regulation services due to their fast response to frequency variations. Considering the uncertain nature of frequency regulation signals (FRS), dedicating the proper amount of capacity for providing frequency regulation becomes a challenging task for BESS owners. In this research, a robust framework is presented for optimal bidding of a BESS regarding uncertainties caused by prices and FRSs which are sent by the system operator. The robust approach assures that enough capacity will be provided for responding to the FRS in the worst case. In addition to the frequency regulation market, the BESS fulfills the routine arbitrage for energy markets. The study is conducted on a 2MWh/1MW BESS and the results show the main profit is obtained by the dedication of the BESS capacity to the frequency regulation service. In addition, compared to the deterministic approach, the self-scheduling is protected against uncertainty realization in the cost of a lower profit.
